Introduction

Recently, China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom, the three major telecom operators, have officially announced that they have received approval from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology for commercial trials of eSIM mobile phones. This means that our mobile phones will soon say goodbye to the physical SIM card that requires a SIM card ejector tool and careful insertion and removal, ushering in a new era of "cardless" mobile phones.

What is eSIM?How is it different from a SIM card?

The physical SIM card we commonly use is called a SIM card, while eSIM is a virtual, electronic SIM card. It embeds the traditional SIM card directly into the device's chip, eliminating the need for a physical card.

You can also think of eSIM as a data file. With it, various electronic devices can connect to the internet, make and receive calls, send text messages, etc., functionally identical to a regular SIM card.

In terms of security, eSIM uses a higher level of encryption and a stronger anti-tampering mechanism, and has no risk of insertion/removal damage or malicious replacement, making it more reliable than traditional SIM cards.

Domestic mobile phone manufacturers are vying for dominance in the eSIM market, officially ushering in the era of SIM-free phones.

Recently, the Chinese version of the iPhone Air officially went on sale. As Apple's thinnest phone to date, it fully adopts eSIM technology and no longer supports physical SIM cards, making it the first phone in China to support eSIM.

Faced with this historic opportunity, leading domestic mobile phone manufacturers have also responded swiftly, with OPPO being the first to take action. On October 16th, at the OPPO Find X9 series new product launch event, OPPO Chief Product Officer Liu Zuohu stated that the OPPO Find X9 Pro Satellite Communication Edition supports eSIM, making it the first domestic flagship model to support eSIM.

It's worth noting that this model did not completely eliminate the physical SIM card slot, but instead adopted a "dual SIM card slot compatible" design, balancing the needs of eSIM early adopters and traditional users, potentially leading to greater market acceptance.

Furthermore, Lenovo and Huawei have both launched new Air models, targeting the iPhone Air and emphasizing a slim and lightweight design. According to industry sources, Xiaomi and Vivo are also developing ultra-thin models. Although they don't yet feature eSIM functionality, given the trend of eSIM technology eliminating the limitations of physical SIM card slots, "pursuing ultimate thinness and lightness" has become a common strategic goal that domestic mobile phone brands cannot avoid.

· For users, eSIM eliminates the cumbersome process of finding a SIM card ejector tool and cutting the SIM card when changing cards. In global communication scenarios, eSIM can directly access local networks abroad, providing a more convenient user experience.

· For mobile phone manufacturers, since eSIM eliminates the need for a separate SIM card slot and tray, they can utilize more space to produce higher-performance phones.

Therefore, it is clear that eSIM has become an unstoppable trend in the era of global connectivity.
